With the recent foreclosure crisis, we as planners have been forced to reexamine how we plan the community of the future. We now have a range of factors that need to be taken into account in order to make these areas both a desirable place to live, but also “foreclosure resistant”.
We know that there is now an increasing demand for high efficiency communities that will give residents options. Incorporating a wide variety of housing options, with choices for transportation, easy access to jobs and amenities, increases not only the efficiency of the community but its desirability.
Factors such as walkability, ease of access and creating a sense of place are now at the forefront of our thinking in planning. It goes without saying that this approach will only increase future communities efficiency, but ensures that they will thrive in the coming decades.
PMC’s Jeff Beiswenger recently shared solutions for combating urban blight and designing the community of the future at the California Redevelopment Association’s Affordable Housing Conference.
